About Luxaltera
Hello! We are Kaija and Markus, and we are a two-artist partnership forming Luxaltera. Lux altera means “other light”. Our abstract bio-flow and bio-nouveau work often requires looking at things from a different angle, deeper or through a different lens. This “other light” inspires us to take a unique approach to every aspect of the work we do including the experience we provide to our clients.
Living and working on the beautiful coast of Vancouver Island, we are surrounded by the nature that inspires our work, actively participating in foraging, photography, painting, fishing and mountain biking.
Working both as separate artists and collaborating together on large-scale work, we provide something singular for our clients. We invite you into our beautiful home studio and into our creative spaces to feel part of the collaboration between you and ourselves.
We are curious, nerdy and fun-loving humans who want to build strong, creative relationships with others through our shared love of science-fiction, biology, physics, film, literature, architecture and paleontology.
Whether you are local, a province over or from overseas, we will help with your travel plans, finding accommodation and amenities as well as activities and events in our area to make your tattoo travel experience a full and relaxing one either alone or with your family. Plan outings for days around your tattoo appointments with our comprehensive maps of the best local restaurants, air bnbs, wineries, mushroom hikes, waterfalls and outdoor activities.
How we work
We each have a distinct style and approach to tattoo work, focusing on different subject matter and technique.
We encourage you to book with either of us based on who you want to interpret your tattoo concept, but where we feel like we really shine, is in collaboration.
Having long worked as separate tattooers, we have found a flow in building truly unique work together and feeding off of each other’s creativity and skill-sets to work more efficiently and imaginatively.
Kaija focuses on strong, elegant design, flow, drawing-on clients and linework while Markus’s deep understanding of lighting effects, colour theory, 3-dimensional forms and rendering bring depth and life to their collaborative concepts.
We ask that potential clients consider commissioning us as a collaborative team to create something truly original for you.
Even if you do not see exactly what you are looking for in our portfolios, we also love the challenge of new projects including reworks, cover-ups and finishing other tattooers’ work.
